Lógico, matemático y novelista británico. Enseñaba matemática en la Universidad de Oxford, era un diácono soltero y disfrutaba de la compañía de niñas menores de edad. Su novela Alicia en el país de las maravillas (1865; ilustrada por John Tenniel) se basa en las historias que inventaba para entretener a sus jóvenes amigas, especialmente Alice Liddell. Su continuación, A través del espejo (1871), retoma las aventuras de Alicia. Llenos de graciosos y a la vez sofisticados juegos de ingenio y acertijos, ambos relatos se han convertido en los libros infantiles más conocidos y universalmente admirados. Entre las otras obras de Carroll se destacan La caza de la Snark (1876), poema narrativo que juega con los sin sentidos, y las novelas infantiles Silvia y Bruno (1889) y Sylvie and Bruno Concluded [Silvia y Bruno: conclusión] (1893). Es también importante por ser uno de los primeros fotógrafos retratistas.
